Participant Protection
The Michigan Alliance for Performing Arts (MAPA) is committed to maintaining a community where all participants can learn, grow, and perform in an environment free from emotional, physical, and sexual misconduct.
To align with national standards for participant safety, MAPA has adopted the same participant protection and background check protocols used by WGI Sport of the Arts (WGI).
For Ensembles Participating in WGI
WGI has replaced the previous SafeSport™ Trained Abuse Prevention course with its new Participant Protection Practice (3P) training program. All adult instructional and administrative staff who have regular contact with or authority over participants must complete the appropriate WGI 3P training as outlined in WGI policy.
New staff members must complete the full 3P Course 1: Setting the Standard before assuming supervisory responsibilities.
Individuals who have already completed the WGI 3P training should follow any refresher requirements as directed by WGI.
For Ensembles Not Participating in WGI
While the WGI 3P program is currently available only to WGI-participating organizations, MAPA expects all ensembles to uphold similar standards of participant protection.
Each ensemble must establish and maintain its own internal training or education program covering topics such as professional boundaries, recognizing and reporting misconduct, and fostering a safe and respectful environment for all members.
Compliance
All participating ensembles must provide MAPA with an accurate list of adult instructional and administrative staff and confirmation of compliance with these participant protection requirements.
Ensembles found not to be in compliance may have their participation in MAPA events limited, conditioned, suspended, or denied at any time, either for the individual(s) involved or for the ensemble as a whole.
All MAPA participants are required to uphold high standards of business and personal ethics in the conduct of their duties and responsibilities. All employees and independent contractors, including adjudicators and contest personnel, as well as the board of directors are also subject to this requirement.
